Maryland Scar Revision Surgery

Scar Revision Surgery

Serving patients in Northern Virginia, Maryland, & Washington, D.C.

Not only do scars tend to bear the burden of a painful memory, but they can lower your self-confidence due to their often unattractive qualities. While scars are impossible to remove, a skilled cosmetic surgeon, like Dr. Daria Hamrah, can minimize their sometimes harsh appearance through scar revision surgery.

Is Scar Revision Surgery Right For You?

If you have recently suffered an injury that resulted in scar formation, you have probably considered scar revision surgery. However, while the scar might appear large and unattractive now, over time, scars tend to blend into the skin, reducing their initial stark appearance. This is why Dr. Hamrah recommends waiting at least a year before deciding on a surgical solution for an unsightly scar.

If you have decided to pursue scar revision surgery, Dr. Hamrah has a personal consultation with each perspective patient. During this meeting, your goals and expectations will be discussed, the scar will be inspected, and an assessment will be given about possible solutions and outcomes.

Benefits of Scar Revision Surgery

When scar revision surgery is performed, the goal is to reduce scar visibility without compromising muscle functionality. Many factors depend on the surgery’s success, including:

  • The wound’s original size and depth
  • Skin tone
  • Blood supply in the wounded region
  • The scar’s direction
  • Practicing optimal post-surgery care

Types of Scars

There are numerous types of scars, and the success of revision surgery is highly dependent on the type of scar.

Keloid scars are thick, itchy clusters of scar tissue that tend to be dark in color. The scar will form beyond the edges of the wound. Steroid therapy or revision surgery is used to treat them, but keloid scars have a tendency to recur.

Hypertrophic scars are similar to keloids in thickness and color, but remain within the boundaries of the original wound. They typically improve without additional help, but can be successfully masked through surgery, if necessary.

Contractures are scars that form after an injury, which resulted in the loss of a massive area of skin, such as burns. Surgery is risky for these scars, as physical therapy might be required in order to restore full functionality following surgery.

Facial scars are often considered a cosmetic problem and are masked more easily than others. If the scar lies along the natural skin creases, Dr. Hamrah can reposition it to run parallel to the crease.

If you live in the Washington, D.C. or northern Virginia areas and are considering scar revision surgery, please contact Dr. Hamrah today to schedule your personal consultation.
