Educational Experience

Dr. Hamrah grew up in Cologne, Germany and received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the prestigious Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He graduated at the top of his class with honors. Following graduation, he moved to Boston, MA to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in Oral Pathology at Harvard University. His training focused primarily on head and neck cancer.

After Harvard, Dr. Hamrah continued his training at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Loyola University of Chicago and Loyola University Medical Center, where he completed Anesthesia and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery internships. Dr. Hamrah then spent four vigorous years training under the world-renowned surgeon Dr. Robert E. Marx at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital. His training included a heavy emphasis on tumor and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck.

Dr. Hamrah completed a fellowship in facial cosmetic surgery with the UT Southwestern Medical School. This fellowship involved an entire year devoted to only cosmetic surgery of the face. This separates Dr. Hamrah from the majority of other cosmetic surgeons, as most are not fellowship trained. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and he holds a Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Certification and License from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Health Professions. Dr. Hamrah focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the head and neck and has been engaged in the oral and maxillofacial surgery field for the past 18 years. He is one of few maxillofacial surgeons to hold a license to practice Facial Cosmetic Surgery in the state of Virginia. Further, Dr. Hamrah has full Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and facial plastic/cosmetic surgery privileges at Virginia Hospital Center (formerly Arlington Hospital) and is on active staff in the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Hamrah is also the one of the co-founders of “Alegria” a foundation for cleft, lip and palate and travels to Colombia annually to perform charity surgery for indigent children with facial deformities.

Dr. Hamrah’s Surgical Philosophy

While Dr. Hamrah’s extensive qualifications and experience are more than enough to provide countless patients with the confidence needed to pursue his services, Dr. Hamrah also maintains a unique philosophy on facial cosmetic surgery that sets him apart from other cosmetic surgeons.

Due to Dr. Hamrah’s seven years or oral and maxillofacial surgery experience (the majority of cosmetic surgeons dilute their experience by focusing throughout the entire body) he approaches cosmetic surgery from the inside out. This means he considers bone structure, as well as any visible sagging, asymmetry, wrinkles, and undesirable facial contours.

To Dr. Hamrah, facial surgery is much like making up a bed nicely: if the mattress is lumpy, there isn’t much point in spreading a nice bedcover over it (that is, if the bones are problematic, fixing the skin doesn’t help much).

If you live in the Washington, D.C. or northern Virginia areas and are considering oral and maxillofacial surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, or a non-surgical solution to accomplish your cosmetic goals, please contact experienced cosmetic and oral surgeon Dr. Hamrah today to schedule your personal consultation
