Questions About Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)
Can my TMD be fixed with at-home remedies?
At-home remedies, such as limiting your jaw movement, using a splint, or changing your dietary habits, will only reduce your pain. Unfortunately, the only way to completely get rid of symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint disorder is through surgery, which may consist of:
• Bite adjustment
• Arthroscopy
• Open joint repair restructuring
Does Dr. Hamrah use a TENS Unit for TMD treatment?
While some physicians treat TMD with a TENS Unit, which sends a steady current of electrodes to relax your jaw muscles, Dr. Hamrah does not offer this option to his patients. Like at-home remedies, a TENS Unit will only reduce your pain, not eliminate it.
How does a temporomandibular joint become misaligned?
Numerous forces may misalign your temporomandibular joint, including:
- Poor dental work
- Concussion
- Genetics
- Poor jaw alignment
- Bad posture
- Suffering trauma during involvement in a heavy contact sport
- Suffering from whiplash after a traffic accident
- Jaw clenching
- Teeth grinding
- Frequently chewing gum
If you think you may suffer from TMD and live in the Washington, D.C. or northern Virginia area, please contact the oral surgery offices of NOVA SurgiCare today to schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Hamrah.
